AUGUST 2016 Letter LIVING WELL

If you are tired of watching and hearing about politics, raise your hand!

This election for president is like none other. You may have the same thoughts that we do – How did we get to this place in our country?

We are teaching 1 Samuel in our Bible study class. Our scene today has echoes of Samuel’s day. God led the nation of Israel. He spoke through a man who loved Him and followed Him – Samuel, a judge, a prophet, and a priest. Samuel’s sons did not follow His example and were dishonest. As Samuel grew older, the people lost confidence the leadership and demanded a king. We want a king over us. Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.

As in those days, be careful what you ask for – you may get it! The nation of Israel had the mistaken idea that they needed the right person to lead them. God explained to Samuel, “they have rejected me as their king.”

It is important to be involved in the process of electing our leaders, but our hope cannot be in having the right person. The only hope for our country is that Our God is our King!

Our form of government gives us a voice with those who are elected. There are issues close to our hearts that we carry a minority worldview. But maybe, we could call for more kindness, respect, compassion, and cooperation in the public arena. Maybe, we could exhibit those qualities as we discuss politics. And most of all, we could display those values in our own lives.

Kindness is essential in making public discourse fruitful, but is also a key quality in building a marriage that will flourish. When kindness is absent, resentment and contempt grow. Read more about kindness on the our Living Well in Marriage blog here.

Donna will be teaching “Be Transformed” at our church on Sunday evenings beginning September 11. Let us if you are interested or want more info.
